FORWARD in “The Future of the Internet”

Friday, April 18th, 2008

The FORWARD project participated in the event “The Future of the Internet: Perspectives emerging from R&D in Europe” organized by the Slovenian Government, in the context of the Slovenian Presidency of the EU 2008, which was held in Bled, Slovenia between 31 March-2 April 2008. The aim of the conference and the associated workshop was to foster the exchange of ideas and emerging solutions towards a coherent approach for excellence and innovation in the future Internet.

During the two-day technical workshop sessions, representatives of European research projects funded by the 7th Framework Programme discussed emerging concepts and ideas in groups themed around the topics of Networks, Services, Content, Security, and Experimental Facilities. Some of the challenges outlined in the Security session included identity management, trust, vulnerabilities and threats in emerging platforms, experimental facilities, as well as legislation and economics and their links with security. In the Security, Privacy and Trust session, Sotiris Ioannidis from FORTH-ICS participated in the panel that discussed “Cross-issues in Network Infrastructures and Experimental Facilities” .

The FORWARD project also signed the Bled Declaration titled “Towards a European approach to the Future Internet” which calls on European Internet scientific and economic actors, researchers, industrialists, SMEs, users, service and content providers, to “redesign the Internet, taking a broad multidisciplinary approach, to meet Europe’s societal and commercial ambitions.”

Welcome to the FORWARD blog!

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Welcome to the official FORWARD project blog! January marked the onset of the project with the kickoff meeting that was held on Monday January 21st at the Technical University of Vienna. The meeting was marked by lively discussion and active brainstorming. The primary topics discussed were the first FORWARD workshop, the project infrastructure, and the project working groups.

The workshop was scheduled for the 17th and 18th of April at Gothenburg, Sweden. The consortium will be inviting leaders in the field of security, from ongoing European projects, as well as experts from the industry and project managers from the Commission to participate in the workshop.

The consortium also highlighted topics of interest to each partner. The list includes: Distributed Defense, Critical Infrastructure Protection, Fraud and Economics, Harassment and Misinformation, Smart Devices, Network Infrastructure, and Metrics. These topics will be included for discussion during the first FORWARD workshop. However we expect other topics to also come out of the discussion. These topics will form the basis of the consortium working groups (and also the focus of more blogs that will appear on this site!).

The FORWARD blogs site is only part of the online collaboration platform of the project. The exact synthesis of the platform was discussed during the project kickoff meeting. FORTH presented the web pages created for the project as well as the proposed collaboration tools. The tools included a wiki, online forums, an online file repository and this blog. All these will enable close collaboration between the partners as well as a basis for distribution of the work performed in the FORWARD project.
